This is a very simple Thakkali kulambu /Tomato Kulambu dish, Whenever tomatoes are cheap my mom buy in boxes at wholesale price and prepare many dishes with tomatoes, one of which is this Tomato kulambu recipe. When I went to buy vegetables last week, tomatoes were very cheap immediately bought around 5kgs of tomato, so thought of doing this Thakkali kulambu.Tomatoes are rich in Vitamin A,C and Folic acid. Enjoy this tangy tomato kulambu with Idly or Dosa. Kids will love this tangy tasty dish.

Serves : 5
Ingredients:
Tomato : 5 nos
Large Onion : 1
Garlic pods : 10 nos
Green Chilli : 3
Chilli powder : 1 tbsp
Turmeric powder : 1/2 tbsp
Salt to taste
To Temper:
Mustard seeds : 1/2tsp
Urad Dhal : 1/2 tsp
Coriander leaves : 1 Sprig
Fennel Powder : 1tbsp
To ground:
Coconut : 1/4 cup
Cumin : 1tbsp
Method:
Tomato Puree:
Boil the tomatoes in water for 5 minutes or until it is half cooked and soft,remove the skin and grind to smooth paste.
Coconut Mixture:
Grind coconut and cumin to fine paste.
- Heat oil in a wok / Kadai when it is hot add mustard seeds and urad dhal, when mustard starts to crack add in fennel seeds, green chillies, Garlic and curry leaves followed by chopped onions.
- When Onions turn to golden brown colour add the mashed tomato puree to it.
- Add chilli powder,turmeric powder and salt . Let in cook for another 10 minutes.
- Add the grinded coconut paste to it. Simmer and cook until it combines well.
- Finally off the stove and add coriander leaves and lime juice.
Tips:
I prefer the sour taste, so added lemon for extra taste, if you don't prefer you can skip it. This will be a good side dish for Idly, Dosa or you can add to rice.
Since i have prepared this for kids i wanted this to be less spicy, If you want to be very spicy you can add extra green chilli or Red chilli powder.
